Airway: How we breathe dramatically impacts our health!

Ghrelin and leptin are key hormones that regulate appetite and energy balance, with ghrelin stimulating hunger and leptin signaling satiety (fullness). One night of poor sleep increases ghrelin and stimulates appetite. When we sleep with our mouths open, we active our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) which has been clinically proven to decrease our deep sleep. Sleep cycles, particularly the deep sleep stages, are crucial for regulating ghrelin and leptin among MANY other things. Poor sleep increases overall hunger and cravings, especially for high-calorie, carbohydrate-rich foods and not the good carbs like fruits/veggies but breads, pastas and other empty, harmful carbs.  When we're in a state of fight or flight our cortisol goes up and when cortisol is up too much, weight loss is much harder.

It goes without saying that if we're mouth breathing, our mouth will be dry. The concern is that most people do not know this is a major concern.  A lot of countries and medical fields recognize mouth breathing as a significant risk factor for various health problems, especially in children.

Our mouths are supposed to be WET, this is why God gave us saliva. Saliva is AMAZING!  It contains a modest but diverse set of enzymes, mostly related to digestion, antimicrobial defense, and tissue maintenance.

Did you know that mouth breathing changes our facial development over time?! Think long faces, crowded teeth with narrow mouths with a palate (roof of the mouth) that is high vs wide, due to the tongue not sitting against it as it should. The tongue helps form our face! When the mouth is open, the tongue is down, not pushing the bones aside to widen the arch. The roof of the mouth is the floor of the nose. When the palate is more narrow, so is the nasal passage making it harder to nasal breathe. Mouth breathing also causes congestion of the nasal cavity. Use it or lose it! If you're a mouth breather, lets talk about what can be done about it.

Sleep Hygiene

FALLING asleep and STAYING asleep are two different things.

There are many factors that can impact one's sleep quality. While I put healthy eating and routine exercise pretty high on my list of things important to a quality life, SLEEP and mental health are a notch (or two!) above that.

Its been said that if our mental health and sleep are poor, good luck benefiting from

Common things impacting sleep quality: STOP with all the energy drinks all day! Too much water, eating and mental stimulation too close to bed time, or even wearing sunglasses in the early morning and evening can mess with our circadian rhythm. WHAT? Let's chat about YOUR sleep hygiene and things that may be impacting it for the better or worse.

A website I love to give my patients is www.drgominac.com because her website is a wealth of knowledge on D3 and B vitamins, sleep and even headaches as well. Dr Stasha Gominak is a neurobiologist who closed her practice after 30 years to focus on helping people sleep better, which is a major backbone to health as a whole. Check her out!

My mouth falls open when I sleep. What can I do?

Mouth Taping

If you're over the age of 13 and below the age of 40, you've likely seen mouth taping on TikToc or somewhere else on the internet. Yes it's legit when done correctly. There should be a disclaimer here that if the wrong person mouth tapes incorrectly, it can and has been fatal so please make sure you're doing the right thing for you. Lets talk about what that might be.

Chin Straps

We do what we have to do to keep our mouth closed during sleep. I'm aware this isn't the most attractive way to go to bed but once you feel the difference in your quality of sleep, not to mention oral health, I'm hoping you'll be hooked. Different things work for different people but we ALL benefit from deeper sleep, better detox and a healthier mouth by nasal breathing, especially during sleep. Let's talk about options for you.
